From Stop-Gap to Soulful Family Kitchen
The Brief
When my client and her two children first moved into this home, it was meant to be temporary - a stop-gap while they found their forever house.
Five years later, they’d fallen in love with the area, and the time had come to make the space feel like home.
The kitchen-diner was the heart of family life, but it didn’t feel connected. The cooker was tucked into a corner, isolating whoever was cooking from the rest of the room, and the layout made everyday life feel awkward. A full renovation wasn’t on the table, but there was real potential to create better flow and a more social, welcoming space without starting from scratch.
The Design Process
We started by exploring how the family actually used the room - where they cooked, ate, and gathered. The biggest issue wasn’t style, it was connection. By bringing the cooker forward into a more central position, we anchored the kitchen activity where life happens... in the middle of the home, not the corner.
Reworking the layout gave us opportunities to improve flow around the space while still making use of the existing cabinetry. Subtle changes, like repositioning lighting, introducing warmer materials, and refining the colour palette helped the space feel intentional rather than makeshift.
The design stage focused on creating options that balanced practicality and warmth. Visuals helped my client see how a few well-placed changes could transform the feel of the entire room - without the cost or upheaval of a full refit.
The Result
The finished design gives this family kitchen a real sense of belonging. The space now feels centred, connected, and lived-in, a place where cooking, chatting, and homework can all happen at once. It’s not about perfection; it’s about creating a space that finally fits the way they live.
